A “Prince” at the Start the Samnaun Success Story
The story of Family Hangl in Samnaun reads like a fairytale, just like the development of the place.
The success story really does start with a Prince, albeit it only a surname: farmer Joseph C. Prinz (1) started the list of the family’s “pioneer-deeds” when he and his wife Alberta (1a) turned their farm into the first guest house in the village of Samnaun. The small “Guest House Stammerspitze” (2) steadily grew over time (3). In 1933, Family Prinz built a connecting hotel, which offered running hot & cold water even then, as well as central heating and full board. On top of this, the post office in Samnaun was integrated into the property and Hotel “Post” was born (4).
In 1953, Johannes Hangl (5) started working as a farm hand on Family Prinz’s farm. Here he fell in love with the second youngest of the four daughters, Caroline (5a). She was the first ski instructor in the village (6) and taught at Musellahang, the first ski lift in Samnaun, which Family Prinz had helped to build in 1955. In 1959, Johannes and Caroline got married, took over Hotel Post and started the next generation with six boys and one girl (7). From here on in, the business was constantly extended, renovated and expanded: a petrol station in 1962, Guest House “Caroline” in 1964 and much more.
In 1984 they founded the family corporation Hangl AG. Their children and other partners have become increasing active within the company and have taken on increasing levels of responsibility. Family Hangl (8) is constantly growing, as are their ambitions. As such there will certainly be many more stories to tell about the future of Family Hangl...
Family Hangl as Ski Pioneers in Samnaun
Skiing in Samnaun has always been inextricably linked with the name Hangl. Caroline Hangl was the first ski instructor in Samnaun and played a significant role in the rise of winter tourism.
The Rewards of Dedication
Martin Hangl crowned the ski era when he won the World Cup title for super-G in Vail. His siblings complete the success story with multiple titles, such as Swiss ski instructor champion and even ski instructor world champion.
...and their genes are being successfully passed on again...
World champions have taken the youngest members of Family Hangl under their wings to teach them skiing 101. They are already established on the Swiss youth squad and are striving towards participation in World Cup races.
